Quartier

The Saint-Seurin Basilica is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is Bordeaux’s oldest church (6th century). Its 11th-century crypt contains the tomb of Saint-Fort, Merovingian sarcophagi, and a vast Christian necropolis with tombs dating from the 4th to the 18th century. The basilica's style is predominantly Romanesque, but many Gothic elements pertain - the result of successive additions to the structure over the centuries.

Place de la Comédie/Grand théâtre

Along with the operas of Versailles and Turin, the Grand-Théâtre has one of the most beautiful 18th century concert halls in the world!
The masterpiece by Victor Louis,
Parisian architect , of Chartres Cathedral fame) was built during the reign of Louis XVI.

Restoration over the past few years has restored the theatre's original lustre. The 18th century décor, damaged by oil lamps, once again shines.

This neo-classic monument dedicated to the muses can be visited all year long (depending on the rehearsal and concert schedule).

The stately cafe built into it is a civilised spot for a drink.

Ouvert toute l'année, de 13h00 à 18h00, fermé lundi, dimanche.

Palais Galien

Located just outside the city centre, the Palais Galien constitutes the most ancient Gallo-Roman vestige in Bordeaux.

The ruins of this amphitheatre nevertheless evoke Burdigala (Bordeaux's Roman name) at its peak. A monumental gateway remains to this day, as well as several arches and wall remnants incorporated into surrounding houses
In times past, some 20,000 spectators (or twice the town's population) watched the games on wooden benches.
The Palais Gallien was a den of crooks and prostitutes in the 17th century... It was also said that witches gathered here, before a mayor transformed the site into a quarry during the revolutionary period.

Ouvert tous les jours, du 01/06 au 30/09 de 13h00 à 18h00

Jardin Public

The Jardin Public combines the famous honey-coloured stone of stately 18th century buildings with a relaxed setting in which a pond is surrounded by centuries-old trees. A veritable "green lung" in the city centre, the 11 hectares of grass, trees, flowers, and plants also include a children's playground and the famous Guignol Guérin puppet show.

Framed by lovely townhouses, and including a Natural History Museum, a small botanical garden, and a bar-restaurant (L’Orangerie), the Jardin Public has been classified a Jardin Remarquable de France..
